Eat,
Drink, and Celebrate Local Vineyards and Farms in Support of Earth
Pledge
You probably know that drinking local wine and eating local food is
interesting and satisfying (to say the least!), but did you know
it also helps the environment? Take Long Island for example, one
of the most threatened agricultural regions in the United States.
The vineyards and farms located here help maintain open space
on land that would otherwise be developed. Local vintners and
farmers everywhere are environmental stewards, providing habitat
for wildlife, preserving our scenic working landscapes, and enhancing
our economy and culture.
On Monday, April 28th, you can help by spending an evening with
us tasting wines from 25 Long Island vineyards and food from top
New York City and Long Island chefs. Our celebration will take
place at Guastavino’s restaurant in NYC. Co-hosted by Earth
Pledge and the Long Island Wine Council, and made possible by
the generous support of BOSCH, the 13th annual Windows on Long
Island Wine benefits Earth Pledge, helping us continue to promote
healthy, eco-friendly, local and sustainable agriculture and cuisine.
Your attendance supports local farmers and vintners, and will
help preserve New York's farmland. A ticket to this event makes
a great birthday, thank you or early Mother’s Day gift.

Earth
Pledge and Partners Develop First NYC-Based Green Roof Study
As
part of Earth Pledge's green vision for New York City, the Green
Roofs Initiative is developing Green Roofs for New York City:
An Interdisciplinary Study in collaboration with NASA/Goddard
Institute for Space Studies, The
Columbia Earth Institute and Mailman
School of Public Health, Montclair
State University, and HydroQual,
Inc. The study will investigate the impacts, costs, and benefits
of the development of citywide green roof infrastructure in New
York.
This interdisciplinary research project, the first of its kind
in New York City, will use computer modeling and quantitative
analysis to measure the impact of green roofs on building infrastructure,
urban heat island effect, regional warming, heat-stress related
mortality, energy use and demand, and pollution by combined sewage
overflow.
A demonstration project in northern Manhattan is also being developed
to serve as a data-collection site on storm-water retention, ambient
air temperature, roof membrane temperature, and plant survivability.
Undertaken in conjunction with the Green Roofs Policy Task Force
- a stakeholders group of city, state and federal agencies, as
well as community organizations – the study will identify
the social and economic policies that could be implemented to
encourage the development of green roofs in New York City. This
research project enables us to fully develop the case for green
roofs as an innovative environmental solution for New York City.

Your
Seafood Choices Can Make a Difference
Chilean Sea
Bass, Swordfish, Farmed Salmon. It’s hard to keep track
of the seafood we should steer clear of these days. Our demand
for healthy and delicious seafood is outpacing the regeneration
of the world’s fish stocks. But you can still satisfy your
craving for fish by checking out NYC’s Greenmarkets, where
fresh, local, and wild caught seafood can be purchased, often
directly from the fishermen. Folks like Alex and Stephanie Villani
of Blue Moon Fish can be found at the Union Square Greenmarket,
and they guarantee their selection-which includes fresh clams,
herring, mackerel, mussels, striped bass, and tuna-is caught locally
in the waters off Eastern Long Island.
Visit FarmToTable.org
to find out where you can shop for local seafood. FarmToTable.org
also contains articles on sustainable seafood, links to organizations
that promote healthy seafood choices, and great seafood recipes,
like Home Restaurant’s Manhattan clam chowder.
